7 Days in the Heart of Greece
The Classic Tour
The regions of Athens, Corinth and Argos have spectacular and famed locations to visit: the cities themselves, as well as Sounion and Eleusis, Mycenae and Nafplio, and many legendary places in between. It is a region of ancient tombs, white marble, olive-green hills and golden islands set in that famous wine dark sea.
For those who venture into the valleys behind, along winding gullies and over long-fingered ridges that slice the land into ribbons, another Greece awaits. Here are the hill-towns and mountain villages, hidden among olive groves and resplendent in tumbling bougainvillea, the fresh ripple of a stream beside them, just waiting to be discovered. There is a special beauty about the heart of Greece that begs to be captured.
This photo tour is being developed; the final itinerary and details like lodgings are still being confirmed. Right now I plan to run this tour once in August and once in September.

7 Days in the Heart of Greece
Touring Greece is ideal for the photographer, with the light and shadow playing off hills, trees, stone buildings and the eternally present sea. These seven days are much about stopping to photograph the natural scenery and local life as it is to see the places mentioned. You will learn and practice several photographic techniques: composition, street photography, unusual angles, portraits, film/shutter/aperture combinations, depth of field, using light and many others. Photo skills will be reviewed "as-you-go" and also at the end of the day so you get the best from these opportunities. At the end of the day you will also have something to see and enjoy, always with photography in mind.
Everyone is going to arrive at different times, so this is a very relaxed day, for settling in and getting to meet each other. Before dinner we will have an orientation session and a walk around Plaka as it comes alive for the night, with dinner in the Strofi Restaurant. Afterwards, cameras and tripods at the ready, we will visit some of Athens’ famous places by night.
Day One • Athens
The tour begins with a walk around and up to the Acropolis, where you can get those ‘essential’ photos and take in all of Athens below you. From there we walk to the Areopagos and the Pnyx, then down to the Agora and the Forum. From here we walk around Plaka, Monastiraki and Syntagma to see the street life, food markets and the changing of the guards. In the afternoon we visit other points with great views over the city. Lunch is at a local taverna in Plaka area and dinner at Kuzina Restaurant.
Day Two • Into the Peloponnese
With a very early start we head off to the Corinthian Gulf, with either a visit to Aigosthena or a trip through the Canal itself if possible. From there we visit the ruins of Corinth and then on to Nemea, home of Herakles’ famous lion. For us it is the vineyards and wine cellars of Semeli, where we will also have a delicious lunch. In the afternoon we see the open air water power museum and cultural activities at Dimitsana, where we dine and sleep.
Day Three • Wild Nature
For the adventurous, we trek the Lousios Gorge, visit Phisosophou and Prodromou monasteries and ancient Gortys. Don’t worry, for non-trekkers we have a bus, which will follow the trail but jump ahead to let people do some rafting, which is also great for photo shoots of course. Lunch is ‘in the field’, followed by a trip to Palamidi and Burtzi. In the evening we go to the lovely port of Nafplio for dinner and a walkaround/photoshoot at night.

Day Four • Ancient Places
This is a day for photography and discovery, for we visit three very ancient sites: Mycenae, Tiryns and Argos. In between all that we have a wonderful lunch in Fougaro Restaurant, where you can do some photography of Greek cuisine. Fresh from tramping around ancient pottery, you get to visit a pottery workshop to show you how it is made. We might also be able to fit in some traditional village dancing. Dinner is in Nafplio, which is also where we sleep.
Day Five • To the Sea and Islands
After an early morning walk up to the Venetian fortress of Palamidi that dominates Nafplio and the Bourtzi fortress in the bay. Then we drive to Ermioni and from there jump aboard the boat to the island of Hydra, where we spend the rest of the day, evening and night. Lots of things to photograph, with plenty of time to relax, swim, fish and explore this picturesque island where cars are banished!
Day Six • Back to Athens
With plenty of time to see the fishermen coming in with their catch in Hydra, we leave this lovely island to visit ancient Epidauros, where we will also have lunch in its quiet bay. In the afternoon we stop by Eleusis, site of the Mysteries where Hades took Persephone down to the Underworld. We also stand where Xerxes sat as he watched the Persian fleet be defeated at Salamis. With a dinner in Piraeus and night shots of its harbor, we complete a busy stay before crashing out in our hotel in Athens.
Day Seven • Attica
Visiting Greece is nothing without seeing Marathon and Sounion, so we take you a tour of the coast of Attica as it used to be. Lunch in Laurion, site of the silver mines that made Athens rich, sunset over Poseidon’s temple at Sounion to capture those unforgettable images, then our last, celebratory dinner at one of the beachfront tavernas. Then, for the absolutely determined, a final night tour of Athens.
