One Day in the Italian Riviera
Cinque Terre • Portofino • Genova • Alassio • Sanremo
The Italian Riviera is a great arc of olive-green hills that curves around the northwestern coastline of Italy from Tuscany to France. It has a spectacular and famed coastline, with places like Portofino and the Cinque Terre the most prized of its many fishing villages, pitched atop steep hills that cascade to the sea.
Everyone who travels to the Italian Riviera stays by or near to the sea, because its golden sand beaches are so welcoming, the water is so inviting and the colorful lanes of bistros and boutiques are so enticing. For those who venture into the narrow valleys behind those beaches, along the winding gullies and over long-fingered ridges that splice the land into ribbons, another Liguria awaits. For here are the hill-towns and mountain villages, hidden among olive groves and resplendent in tumbling bougainvillea, the fresh ripple of a stream beside them and lazy smoke coming from the chimneys of country taverns.

One Day Tour in Genova
Genova, capital city of the Italian region of Liguria, clambers up over hills and dives down into steep valleys that curl around its great harbor. Here merchants learned to build their wealth and success by trading throughout the Mediterranean and beyond, all the way to England and Russia. One of the most memorable things to do in Genova is to walk out onto a terrace or balcony in the early morning, just as the sun is rising to your left, its pale golden light shimmering across the pastel sky and making a silver carpet of the placid sea that stretches out from the town into the far horizon.
The tour begins in Piazza Ferrari. Weather permitting, the first part of the morning will be out of Genova, to visit the The hill forts of Sperone, Diamante and Buin, then coming back down the steep hills to see a lovely panorama from the Castello d'Albertis. A stroll down Via XX Settembre to capture Genova’s elegant arches, then turn back to the house of Columbus, the Porta Soprana and a walk along the walls.
After lunch we do a walk-about tour of Genova's historic center: the sottoripa and the carrugi, the towered gates and cathedrals, the palaces along the Via Aurea, then heading up to the Palazzo Ducale and Piazza Ferrari. We finish with another walk-about down to the sea, with its harbor and its bastions, the open market, a wonderful pirate ship, and the famous Lanterna.
